IBM Connections; future or passing fad

I want to get everyone's opinion on this. I am not saying that I believe either way. I am pursuing becoming a connections developer.

But I talk to clients, peers, and friends about connections and I do not get a warm fuzzy feeling about it, especially in the SMB market. Cost, implementation and user adoption are the main concerns.

Some quotes I have heard:
-Why would I want to bring it into my business, seems like an interruption,
-I do not have the skills in-house, I can do most of this on Domino.
-It just does not make sense.

So will IBM Connections be the next best thing, or the next in line to follow E-suite, components workplace, etc.

Bring it on.

IBM Connect 2013 out with the old in with the new. (Sort of)

So in 8 days I will be in Orlando eagerly anticipating the week ahead. I arrive in Orlando at Saturday at 10:30AM and leave Thursday evening.

The more I read about the show, I see quite a few Lotusphere old-timers are not going. I will miss them, but I also look forward to meeting the new first time attendee's, and if they are speaking, especially watching their sessions.

Every year I vow to meet 15 new people. I always exceed that so this year I am shooting for 25. Will that be You?

It is also the first time in 6 years that I will not be working the showcase floor. In one sense I enjoyed being on the floor as it made it easier to see so many of you whom I have had the privilege on knowing over the last 23 + years. But I always missed sessions and speakers that I really wanted to see. It will be refreshing to have the entire week to go to sessions and explore the labs.

The future is ahead of us and in my 24 years experience with Lotus/IBM notes, from R1 forward, I think the best days are still ahead of us.

See you in Orlando (I hope)

IBM Notes 9 Browser Plug-in, Why do I want Xpages anymore?

So I installed the beta IBM Notes 9 today, Love it so far. Mainly been playing with the web browser plug-in.

I am constantly asking myself, why do Xpages now. I know Xpages, I teach the classes, but form a purely fiscal standpoint, how can i justify the expense of doing my apps with Xpages when the plug-in works so well?   (Click in the image to view full size)

I have tried some code i use to update the ACL form the application itself, so non-managers can add team members to a Teamroom db, and it worked perfectly, no rewriting the code to work as ssjs or a server agent call from the Xpage. What's not to like?

I want as many opinions on this as I can get. I find myself recommending solutions to clients an want to be able to answer this intelligently.

So what will it be?  Xpages? or the the Note 9 Browser Plug-in?

The Social Media Experiment: Part 2

So in 6 weeks I found a new position at GreyDuck Technology.  GreyDuck is a Lotus/Domino consulting company based in Minnesota. I will be doing a lot of the same things I did at teamstudio, Administration, Development, Health-checks, Etc. So if you need help in your environment let me know.

I was partially Social media that got me the position. It was from my network of LinkedIn contacts.  Social Media, primarily LinkedIn, did get me some visibility into companies that were hiring. I upgraded my LinkedIn account to Jobseeker and get an increase in profile views by 2000%  (Yes 2000 not a typo). So that alone was worth the upgrade cost. Many of the contacts were not relevant though. Many were people trying to fill jobs that I had some experience in, but not enough to do it full time.

I reached out to my network and was suggested by a contact to reach out to GreyDuck. Well as you can guess, I am in my third week working for them.

The best advice I can give is be actively engaged on LinkedIn. Whether you are looking for work, or looking to reach out to new customers, it is the place to be.

My social media experiement, or can social media help me get a job

As I begin the month of May I find myself in a all to familiar situation, Back on the job market.

With all the hype of social media, your network, your connections Etc, it is time to put it to the test.

Lets see how good all this is at finding employment.  My linked in Profile has my latest information.

So they say the best jobs are not posted on career sites, (I am using all the big ones) but are found through networking.

Bring it on
